Hi! We have a separate article covering the process of obtaining a Spanish student visa, so here we will focus only on the required documents and key points to keep in mind when submitting your application.

As of June 1, 2026, applications for a Type D student visa must be submitted through BLS visa centers from your country of citizenship with the exception of some countries in EU where it is done through Spanish Consulates.
IMPORTANT: this is a standardized, general list that may not include some specifics of your country. However, in general, this is a close enough summary for you to follow when preparing docs for the study visa application.

What documents do you bring for the application

Spanish student visa for language courses
  • National visa application form
You can check the form here, however keep in mind that your country may have a different language in the form apart from Spanish. Please, check BLS visa center website in your country.

Fill it out and sign the documents on the last page. Before you fill out the form, you need to have the following information ready:

    • The school's acceptance letter, so you can include the on the school and the course
    • Your rent, so you can add the address in Spain
    • Your arrival date. It can be 3-4 weeks prior to the start of your language course
  • Photos
2 recent photos in color, carnet format
  • Your passport
    You must submit:

    • The original
    • Copies of all pages (even empty ones) in color
  • Acceptance letter
The document must be provided by a Spanish language school that has a Cervantes Accreditation. It is issued by the school only after it has received your full payment for the language course. The invitation must include:

    • Electronic signature of the school (otherwise you could be required to provide an original doc sent from Spain to you)
    • The course's program
    • Payment confirmation for the course

You can find available Spanish language and University Pathway courses in our website.
  • Spanish health insurance
The insurance must cover all the medical expanses in Spain (no copayments, no limits, no waiting periods). It must cover all the period of your stay in Spain, starting on the day of your arrival or earlier. The docs must include:

    • The policy certificate
    • Mentions of the coverage
    • Payment confirmation
    • Individual conditions (condiciones particulares)

We work with several Spanish insurance providers and help with documents
  • Accommodation reservation
Currently there is no requirement to show rent for the whole period of your course. However, the Spanish authorities may request 1 to 3 months lease contract, depending on the country.

That means that it is necessary to provide a booking confirmation from 4 to 12 weeks minimum, which can be a Booking, Airbnb or Spotahome reservation, or a room from the school.

You can check the booking platforms in our article here
  • Criminal record certificate + apostille
The background check (or a police certificate) must be submitted from any country where you've lived 6 months or more in the last 5 years. Which means that if you're, lets say a US citizen and you've lived or studied, for example, in France, in the last 5 years, you would need to submit a French police certificate as well. Along with the one from your country of citizenship

All the certificates must be apostilled and translated to Spanish by a sworn translator. You must present:

    • The original + Apostille
    • 1 copy
    • a sworn translation
  • Medical certificate
The medical document must contain the following phrase:

This health certificate states that Mr./Mrs. (…) does not suffer from any of the diseases that may have serious public health repercussions in accordance with what is stipulated by the International Health Regulations of 2005

The certificate must be apostilled in some countries and always translated by a sworn translator (traductor jurado)
  • Motivational letter
You won't find it in any official list of requirements, however I always recommend my students to prepare one. It's a 1-page document where you describe and specify your plans for Spain.

Maybe you need language courses to enroll in a Bachelor's or Master's degree or you just want to travel and learn about the Spain's culture and traditions. Whatever the intent is, it is better to put it down in writing.
  • Financial means
Generally, the Spanish authorities require you to have at least 600 euros per month of your planned stay, which means that for a 1-year course it would be around 7.200 euros. However, it is better to show a little bit more (7.500 or more) in your bank account.

If you provide your own funds, then you'd need to show:

    • bank statement with movements from the last 3-6 months
    • current balance of 7.500 euros or more
    • and be able to prove the legality of funds, if requested (job contract or tax docs)

If your parents are your sponsors:

    • their 3-6 month bank movements
    • your birth certificate to prove kinship
    • a sponsorship letter from your parent

All the documents must be submitted as originals (with bank stamps), copied and translated to Spanish, though in some countries you can submit them the English.

This amount shown does not include the cost of the course.
